[Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Hydrocarbons or derivatives thereof are freed from weakly acid-reacting organic compounds by extraction with aqueous alkali solution containing the sodium salt of a fatty acid containing two carbon atoms, or the potassium salt of a fatty acid containing one, two or six carbon atoms. Alkali metal, alkaline earth, or ammonium hydroxides, bicarbonates or carbonates or quaternary ammonium compounds may be used in conjunction with sodium acetate or potassium formate or acetate. Liquids treated are gasoline, kerosene, gas oil, benzene, toluene, xylene ; chlorethane, ethylene dichloride, trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chlorpropane, chlorbutylene, chlorbenzene, brombenzene ; nitroethane, nitrobenzene ; amylamine, aniline, pyridine and petroleum bases, from which small amounts of acidic substances such as mercaptans, phenols and thiophenols are removed by the process. Extraction is preferably effected at normal temperatures. The used solution may be regenerated by flowing in counter-current to steam, with or without prior oxidation treatment to remove sulphur compounds. The hydrocarbons may be pre-extracted with water, caustic alkali, or tri-potassium phosphate. Specification 503,644, and French Specification 827,345 are referred to.
