Divided out of 522.450. Addition to 509,669. [Class 91] [Also in Group IV] Mercaptans are removed from liquid hydrocarbons or their near derivatives by aqueous alkali metal hydroxide containing alkali metal alkyl phenolate and either a sodium salt of a fatty acid having 2 C atoms in the molecule or a potassium salt of a fatty acid having 1, 2, or 6 C atoms in the molecule. Any mercaptans not removed may be converted into disulphides. The alkaline solution may also contain neutral or basic organic substances which are insoluble in the liquid treated, are inert to the components of the alkaline solution, and have B.P.s sufficiently above that of water to permit regeneration of the spent alkaline solution by steaming, e.g., as described in Specification 519,397; suitable substances are those described in Specifications, 494,450, 494,451, 499,678, and 506,574, e.g., propylene-, butylene-, or diethylene glycol; ethylene- or diethylene glycol mono-methyl ether ; methyl- or ethyl-glycerine ; mono-methyl- or monoethyl ether of glycerine ; ethanolamine ; diethanolamine; and diamino-propanol or -butanol. The treatment may be at 32-140‹F. and in countercurrent. Substances treated include gasolene, kerosene, gas oil, benzene, toluene, xylene, chlorethane, ethylene dichloride, trichlorethylene, carbon tetrachloride, chlorpropane, chlorbutylene, chlorbenzene, brombenzene, nitrobenzene, nitroethane, amylamine, aniline, and water-insoluble pyridine homologues and petroleum bases.
