Abstract
940,510. Electric motors. H. M. HOBSON Ltd. Aug. 10, 1961 [July 27, 1960], No. 26125/60. Heading H2A. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A submersible booster pump for use in an aircraft fuel tank comprises a pump unit including a casing, an impeller external to the casing and carried on a hollow shaft rotatable in top and bottom bearings in the casing and driven by an electric motor within the casing, and a passage controlled by a non-return valve for delivering fuel from the impeller to the bearings to provide pressure lubrication of the bearings even when the pump is running in a nearly empty tank, the fuel returning to the impeller from the top bearing through the hollow shaft. The impeller 12, Fig. 5, draws in fuel from the tank through a screen 16 and inlet ports 5, Fig. 6, controlled by a rotatable sleeve valve 7, and discharges it through tangential diffuser ducts (not shown) to an outlet 21. Some of the fuel discharged by the impeller 12 passes through a non-return valve (not shown) into an inner casing 2 to lubricate bearings 13, 19. After passing through the bearing 19, the fuel passes through the hollow shaft 20 to the region of the centre of the impeller 12, where it is joined by fuel that has passed through the bearing 13. In the event of an explosion occurring in the inner casing 2, the non-return valve prevents a flash back to the fuel within the tank. To remove the pump from the tank, screws (not shown) securing an access cover 14 to the tank bottom 31 are first removed. The access cover 14 is then rotated to turn the sleeve valve 7 into a position in which the inlet ports 5 are closed, thereby isolating the fuel in the tank from the pump. The fuel in the pump is then drained by removing a drain plug 15. Screws 8 are then withdrawn, allowing the access cover 14 to be removed. After screws 32 have been undone, the inner casing 2, complete with impeller and motor is removed, an electrical plug fitting 17A on the inner casing becoming detached from a socket fitting 17 carried by the outer casing 30. The outer casing 30 remains fixed to the tank bottom 31.
