Abstract

379,738. Centrifugal pumps. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., Deptford, London, and DAVEY, S. C., The Willows, Dunton Green, Kent. June 4, 1931, No. 16281. [Classes 110 (i) and 122 (v).] A centrifugal pump 14 is driven by an electric motor arranged above it and the pump and motor shafts 12, 4 are separately supported and releasably coupled ; the pump and motor are separated by a partition 24 sealed by a mechanical packing device. The pump impeller is housed in a delivery chamber 19 and has its suction side uppermost in a casing body 9 secured by screws to the lower end of the motor structure. Water enters the suction chamber 20 through a cylindrical gauze filter 47 which can be removed through a hole in the chamber wall normally closed by a screw-plug 49. The partition 24 has a downward extension 25 in which a thimble 26 is secured by screws 27. The thimble supports the bearing 28 for the pump shaft 12 between a shoulder 32 and an extension 31 of the cover 29. A sealing washer 36 is arranged between a collar 40 on the shaft 12, and a compressible ring 37 on a flanged metal washer 36. These parts are kept in engagement by a spring 35, and the washer 36 is prevented from rotation by a stud 42<1> in the thimble 26. If water passes the sealing means and cover 29, it escapes from the draining chamber 23 by holes in the pump body 9. Openings 43 in the body 9 are normally closed by a spring jacket 431, and they permit inspection of and access to the parts. A tongue 45 on the pump shaft 12 engages in a slot in the motor shaft 4, the engagement being effected immediately above the thimble cover 29.
