Abstract

399,665. Centrifugal pumps. WEIR, Ltd., G. & J. and SIM, J., Holm Foundry, Cathcart, Glasgow. Nov. 16, 1932, No. 32367. [Class 110 (i).] A centrifugal pump of the liquid-ring type comprises a rotary casing 1 combined with an impeller having vanes 7 which is mounted on a vertical shaft 15 and driven by an electric motor. A stationary disc 8 covers the vanes and has a flange 9 extending downwards around part of the periphery of the impeller. A fixed scoop 11 entrains liquid and leads it through a port 12 into the vanes to expel air or gas contained in the inter-vane spaces through outlet ports 6<1>, 6, 27, 28, into the casing 21 which communicates with the atmosphere. The impeller afterwards discharges the liquid when outside the arc 9 and the cycle is repeated. Air enters by way of ports 26, 5, 5<1> to the intervane spaces. A roller bearing 19 supports the upper trunnion 18 of the rotating casing. Liquid spilled through the port 28 is caught in a gutter 31 leading to a drain 32. Make-up liquid may be supplied through a port 30 and the priming liquid through a port 30<1>.
