Abstract

1,069,896. Centrifugal pumps. J. L. STULENS. May 14, 1964 [May 15, 1963; Jan. 30, 1964], No. 20108/64. Heading F1C. [Also in Division H2] To permit dismounting of the pump impeller and driving motor 8 in a heated-liquid circulating system, particularly a central heating installation, the flow is diverted, without stoppage, through a by-pass passage 10 by first closing a valve 11 on to a seating 4 and then a valve 15 on to a seating 18. This sequence of closing is assured by suitably arranging and dimensioning the valve hand-wheels 13, 17 as shown. The impeller discharges to a circular cavity 22 which communicates through an annular recess 21 with an outlet 19. Holes 26 communicating with a slot 25 containing a filter 27, as of felt, provide lubrication and cooling of the motor 8. The impeller blades may be symmetrical about their axes, or asymmetrical, Fig. 10 (not shown), to provide a different flow rate on reversal of the motor. The flow rate may be varied by the valve 11. The thickness of the blades may taper from front to back at an included angle of 30 degrees. The motor rotor is turned to ensure it is not jammed when first starting by a screwdriver inserted, after removal of a nut 30, into a bore 28 to engage a slot 29 in the motor shaft 7, the valves 11, 15 being positioned to divert the flow through the by-pass passage.
