Abstract
1,120,672. Centrifugal pumps. SUNSTRAND CORP. July 30, 1965 [Aug. 21, 1964], No.32834/65. Heading F1C. An axial-flow inducer for a radial-flow pump (i. e. a bladed rotor located in front of the pump impeller and rotating therewith) comprises a cylindrical or conical hub-carrying at least one helical blade, the blade pitch increasing from the suction end to the outlet end of the inducer and the rate of change of the blade pitch increasing over at least a portion of the axial length of the inducer. Over an initial part of the inducer, the rate of increase of blade pitch is small to prevent cavitation. Subsequently, the rate of increase is large but below the value at which separation of flow from the blade would occur. Mathematical formulae for determining the blade pitch are given.
