Abstract

940,397. Mechanical couplings for cables. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Feb. 26, 1962 [Feb. 24, 1961], No. 6887/61. Heading H2E. An attachment for relieving a cable of the weight of a hanging electrical apparatus comprises a support sleeve 5 with a longitudinally slotted lower screw threaded portion 6, the free end of a metal wire core 4 other than the supply cores 3 being bent outwardly, inserted in the slot in the screw threaded portion and clamped thereto by a clamping ring 10 screwed on to the threaded portion of the sleeve with or without an intermediate washer 9. Preferably, as shown in Fig. 1, sleeve 5 has a smaller diameter screw threaded portion 6, which has two diametrically opposite slots 8. The cable 1 is of the type having two steel wire cores 4 apart from the supply cores 3 of copper, the former being each bent outwardly, inserted in the slots 8 and clamped against shoulder 7, formed between the sleeve 5 and the smaller diameter portion 6 and against the sleeve wall by means of a cup-shaped washer 9 urged by clamping ring 10 provided by a lamp holder 11 housing the terminals which are attached to the supply conductors. The cable is suspended from a support by means of an assembly as shown in Fig. 3 comprising a metal bridge 14 fixed to the support, a metal sleeve 17 soldered to the bridge and fitted tightly over the cable and a plate 15 soldered to the bridge and to which is screwed the other end of the steel wire cores 4 so that the apparatus is mainly supported by the steel wire cores. Further embodiments are described where the upper end of the sleeve may be internally screw threaded to be attached to a cable guide tube 22 (Figs. 4, 5, not shown) to which may be attached a support for a lamp shade. The upper end of the sleeve may have an external screw thread of small diameter to form a shoulder which provides an alternative support for a lamp shade assembly which is secured to the sleeve by means of a nut.
