940,022. Photomechanical printing surfaces. SOC. CIVILE DE RECHERCHES POUR L'AUTOMATISATION. Nov. 11, 1959 [Nov. 17, 1958], No. 38328/59. Drawings to Specification. Heading G2M. A photosensitive gel exemplified as bichromated gelatin or polyvinyl alcohol is provided on an absorbent element, imagewise exposed, treated with solvent to remove the gel from unexposed areas and then with a settable substance exemplified as polyester resin which is substantially absorbed in such unexposed areas only, after which setting conditions exemplified as heat are applied to the settable substance, and the undissolved gel is removed as with sodium hypochlorite solution from the exposed areas to leave a printing surface in relief, intaglio or silk-screen form according as to the type of exposure. Drawings, not shown, illustrate the above absorbent element as felt, woven fabric, coiled thread, chamois-leather and finely spongeous regenerated cellulose mounted on a support of a synthetic resin such as a polyester laminate, particularly in sleeve formation for cylindrical operation. Printing may be effected in relief form from the settable substance surfaces above such absorbent elements, but, because of the latter, intaglio printing is similar in aspect to what is obtained by silk-screen printing.
