Abstract

1,057,389. Photographic silver halide materials; stop-baths; printing-surfaces. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Nov. 15, 1963 [Nov. 15, 1962], No.45166/63. Headings G2C and G2M. A photographic silver halide material containing a tanning developer is developed, after exposure, in alkali and treated in a stop-bath comprising benzyl alcohol, an acid, water and if necessary to solubilize the benzyl alcohol in the water a mutual organic solvent for benzyl alcohol and water. The organic solvent may be triethylene glycol, ethyl alcohol or 2-ethoxyethanol. Acids specified are phosphoric, acetic, glycolic and citric acids. The tanning developer may be 4-phenyl-catechol and may be incorporated into the silver halide emulsion layer which may also contain paraffin wax. Alternatively, the developer may be coated in a layer between the support and the emulsion, which layer also may contain colloidal silver, and in which case the silver halide emulsion layer may be overcoated with a fogged silver chloride emulsion (see Specification 978, 744). The material becomes greasy-ink receptive in the exposed areas and may be used for printing in a duplicator, for example with Vanson ink and a fountain solution containing ammonium dihydrogen phosphate, ammonium nitrate, nickelous nitrate, formaldehyde diethylene glycol and water.
