A positive photographic image is obtained by exposing a substantially binder-free stratum of photo-sensitive silver halide microcrystals carried on a support and developing with a surface silver halide developed (i.e. one containing no silver halide solvent) in the presence of actinic illumination. The silver halide microcrystal stratum may carry a protective film of a permeable polymer as described in Specification 1, 054, 811.
