Abstract

821,506. Photographic processes. AGFA A. G. Feb. 7, 1957 [Feb. 18, 1956], No. 4246/57. Class 98(2) Positive images are made by exposing a silver halide emulsion layer containing a tanning developing agent, heating the layer to a temperature of 80-150‹C. to reduce and harden the emulsion at the exposed areas, keeping the layer in contact with a transfer layer at 80-150‹C. to transfer unexposed emulsion thereto, separating the two layers, and subjecting the transfer layer to reducing conditions to form a silver image therein. The reducing conditions may be provided by exposing the transfer layer and heating it to 80- 150‹C. The separate heating of the emulsion layer may be omitted and in this case the reducing conditions may be attained by providing reducing substances in the transfer layer. Several copies may be taken from one emulsion layer but the latter should not be exposed to light during this procedure. In ten examples the separate heating of the emulsion layer is always omitted, thus in Example 1 a gelatine-silver halide emulsion containing pyrocatechol, terephthalaldehyde bisulphite, sodium acetate and benztriazole as on a paper support is exposed, heated as at 110-120‹C. for 5 to 30 seconds whilst in contact with an acetyl cellulose acetobutyrate coated paper constituting the transfer layer and the latter is separated, exposed to dull light and reheated to show a deep black positive image of the original. In Example 2 a somewhat similar emulsion but containing also a proportion of metol is exposed and processed as in Example 1 using piperazine in the transfer layer but with omission of the after-treatment of the latter since blackening is effected by the piperazine. The remaining examples mostly follow the procedure of Example 1 and numerous further substances and supports for use in the process are referred to in these examples and in the body of the description. Specifications 655,273 [Group XXX], 790,811 and 801,053 are referred to.
