Abstract

1,265,322. Photoconductive recording element. AGFA GEVAERT. 24 April, 1969 [24 April, 1968; 12 Nov., 1968 (3)], No. 19457/68. Heading H1K. [Also in Division G2] A recording element comprises at least one water permeable recording layer, the waterpermeability of which can be reduced by exposure to electromagnetic radiation without rise in temperature, the layer comprising photoconductive particles and hydrophobic particles dispersed in a continuous hydrophilic binder phase. On exposure to radiation, the change in conductivity in the image areas produces coagulation of the dispersed particles and in consequence reduces the water-permeability of those areas. The areas of different permeability may be used in various ways to give a visible copy or a printing master: (a) dye or a colour catalyst may be diffused into the permeable areas to give either positive or negative images, (b) an etchant may be used on the recording layer or a support beneath to give a planographic or intaglio printing master, (c) dye or colour catalyst may diffuse imagewise from the element to a receiving sheet, (d) the permeable parts may be washed away to give a direct visible copy or a gravure master, (e) a stencil or screen-printing master may be made by coating one or both sides of a screen material, e.g. Japan paper, nylon fabric or woven bronze wire, with the recording layer and after imagewise exposure washing away the permeable areas of the layer, (f) the permeable portions of the image may be transferred to a hydrophilic and/or porous surface, e.g. a paper by squeezing the exposed element against the surface, (g) the converse of process (f) is possible and yields a hectographic master if the transferred materials contains appropriate dyes. In the specific embodiments, a support is provided of polyethylene terephthalate which may be coated with a mixture of urea-formaldehyde resin and silica, paper coated with polythene or cellulose triacetate. The support is coated with at least one subbing layer comprising an aqueous alcoholic solution of copoly vinylidene chloride N - t - butyl acrylamideitaconic acid or copoly butadiene-methyl methacrylate and polyethylene particles together with silica, gelatine, saponin, polyethylene glycol or the sodium salt of the condensation product of oleic acid and methyl taurine. Formaldehyde may be added to assist hardening of the polymeric layer. The photo-conductive particles may be ZnO or PbO + Bi whilst the hydrophobic particles are a dispersion of polyethylene or polymethyl methacrylate. Gelatine or polyvinyl pyrolidone are used as the hydrophilic phase. Additives to the recording layer are colloidal Ag or C, dye mixtures, Na hexametaphosphate, dibutylphthalate, paraffin oil, carnauba wax, isonoylphenyl decaethoxanol or n-hexadecyloxydecaoxethylene. Many other supports, photo-conductors, hydrophobic particles and hydrophilic binders are specified.
