Abstract
938,943. Junction boxes; couplings. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 5, 1962 [Sept. 11, 1961], No. 32528/61. Class 38 (1). A flameproof cable coupling for high voltage cables, of the kind in which the connections are totally enclosed in an external body which includes longitudinal members 14 to take the mechanical working stresses and in which one core 20 of the cable 1 is required to be earthed to the body, has an earth terminal 21 of high conductivity material, directly connecting the earthing core 20 to the body, mounted inside the body independently of the stress bearing members 14, whereby the current carrying capacity of the earthing path through terminal 21 may be made independent of the stress bearing members 14 and substantially equal to that of the earth core 20. As shown (Fig. 1) terminal 21 on the end of core 20 is clamped by screws 23 on to the end of a copper earthing pin 22 screwed into flange 9 on internal core 7 between which and grip 6 the cable armouring is clamped. Provision is made for pin 22 to be screwed into flange 9 in any of three positions. Flange 9 is secured to the main body 13 by bolts. There are three stress-bearing members 14, preferably of steel, which screw into flange 9 at one end 14a and at the other end abut an insulating moulding 16 to which they are secured by screws 17 and which carries the cable sockets 18 sweated to the ends of the cable cores 2, 3 and 4, not shown, lines 19 make connection with the corresponding cores of the incoming cable at the right-hand end of the coupling.
