A narrowing device for a rotary bed circular knitting machine comprises a curved frame 13 concentric to the needle cylinder 43 having knitting cams 16, 17, 18 on its interior surface for engaging the butts 19 of needles 20 and a shaped guide 15 on its exterior surface for a pair of picker arms 35 the ends 36 of which cooperate with the cams 16, 17, 18 to control the needles for narrowing operations. The picker arms are pivoted at 34 on pivot pins 31 to allow up and down as well as horizontal swinging movements and are interconnected by a rod 40 so that only one of the pickers can be in operative position at the same time. Normally with the needle cylinder rotating anti-clockwise continuously the right-hand picker arm is inoperative and the machine knits over the whole periphery of needles. If a narrowing operation is to be performed the needle cylinder is given an oscillating rotary motion of constant amplitude so that at each reversal of movement the butt of the first needle is engaged by the respective picker arm 35 which will be in operative position to raise the needle so that it does not pick up a thread, or form a stitch, the operative picker arm 35 then swinging to its inoperative position and moving through rod 40 the other picker arm to operative position ready for the next reversal of movement. To effect a widening operation a widening mechanism which brings two needles back into operation every reversal of movement of the needle cylinder must be employed to compensate for the continued action of the narrowing operation.
