Abstract

938,363. Converter linings. HARBISONWALKER REFRACTORIES CO. Aug. 28, 1962 [Nov. 13, 1961], No. 32969/62. Class 72. [Also in Group XII] A prefabricated unit for building the lining of a converter, especially an oxygen-blown converter, comprises a plurality of refractory bricks 12 of tar bonded burnt magnesite or tar bonded lime and magnesia mixtures which are bonded together with a mortar 16 of thermoplastic bituminous material such as tar or pitch. The bricks are laid up in courses and the thermoplastic bituminous material applied between the courses. Alternatively the individual bricks are warmed to between 100‹ and 150‹ F. and are dipped in the bituminous material or have the material sprayed or painted on to them prior to laying up giving a vertical as well as a horizontal bond. Metal bands may be used to prevent damage to the edges of the unit in transit. In a modification metal reinforcements are used to strengthen each unit and may either be disposed within each brick or in the mortar. Alternatively each brick is enclosed in a metallic case.
