Abstract

1,232,744. Suspended roofs. LAIDLAW DREW & CO. Ltd. 10 March, 1970 [17 March, 1969], No. 13857/69. Heading F4B. A roof structure for an industrial furnace comprises a plurality of monolithic facing blocks 19 of a refractory material disposed over the furnace chamber, and means for suspending the blocks individually from a supporting framework 24, said blocks being backed up by a first layer 20 of insulating material capable of withstanding temperatures in the range 900- 1600‹ C., this layer being in turn backed up with a second and thinner layer 21 of insulating material which is capable of withstanding temperatures in the range of ambient to 1000‹ C. The blocks 19, which can be of polymer bonded silica or mullite, are each provided with two or more anchor tiles 22 which are preferably moulded into the block at the time of manufacture. An expansion gap is provided between adjacent blocks 19 and these gaps are closed by filler tiles 31, or if necessary, by further caulking the gaps with ceramic fibre 32.
