Abstract

1481571 Furnace linings ZIRCONAL PROCESSES Ltd 17 Sept 1974 40496/74 Addition to 1466241 Heading F4B A furnace or oven wall 1 has a lining comprising refractory fibrous strip parts 8 with fibres (e.g. of ceramic) end-on to a support block 7. The lined wall is made by a method as claimed in claim 1 of the parent complete Specification modified (among other ways) in that the backing metal sheet (1) of the lining element claimed therein is the present furnace or oven wall 1. As shown, steel anchor elements 3, protrude from a steel wall 1 and extend through a mineral wool insulating layer 2 each into a recess 4 in a block 7 formed of expanded exfoliated vermiculite. The recess 4 contains a washer 6 and cement 10 to secure the anchor. Each block 7 with ceramic fibrous strip parts 8 attached thereto is wrapped with a combustible membrane 11 (e.g. of stiff paper). During making of the lining, the membranes 11 cause laterally inward compression of the fibres attached to each block 7. When the furnace is first fired, the membranes burn away. This partly relieves the compression and allows the fibres of adjacent blocks to bear up snugly.
