Abstract

1,038,498. Refractory blocks. STEETLEY REFACTORY BRICK CO. Ltd. Nov. 11, 1964 [Aug. 19, 1963], No. 31998/63. Heading F4B. A refractory unit for metallurgical furnaces comprises a refractory block 11 having one or more flexible supports 12 situated within and extending out of the block 11, attached to anchoring strips 16 under, in the bottom face of or within the block 11. The supports 12 which may be steel wire or rope or natural or synthetic fibre rope are moulded into or pass through holes drilled into the block 11. The supports 12 are looped round a locating bend 17 in strip 16, or in a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), pass through holes in the strip and are formed with a loop 13 at the top round a metal reinforcement 15, the loops being secured by aluminium sleeves 14. The unit may comprise a monolithic structure or a preformed structure of two or more refractory bricks (Fig. 4, not shown) in which the holes may be defined by grooves in the sides of constituent bricks.
