Abstract

1,031,001. Refractory bricks. HARBISON WALKER REFRACTORIES CO. Jan. 19, 1965 [Jan. 30, 1964]. No. 2289/65. Heading F4B. Refractory bricks 11 for use in suspended roofs for furnaces and the like are formed with a keyway 12 into which is fitted a tubular oxidizable metal insert 14 of the same shape as the keyway 12. This shape may be the truncated triangular cross-section shown in Fig. 1 or other sections shown, for example, in Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), may be used. A metal case 23 is attached to the brick which may be in the form of a two-piece overlapping case indicated in Fig. 1, or it may be a single U-shaped case covering three sides only to which a separate flat plate may optionally be attached to cover the fourth side. The keyway 12 remains uncovered by the metal case 23 by arranging a notch or cut-out 22 in said case or using a case that terminates just below the keyway. The bricks are preferably made from a magnesia-chrome ore and reinforcing plates 13 may be used. In a modification, the keyway 12 may be formed a short distance below the edge of the brick.
