Abstract

1,165,615. Refractory blocks. CENTRE NATIONAL DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES. 28 April, 1967 [29 April, 1966], No. 19741/67. Heading F4B. A dolomitic block, with an inserted reticular metallic framework, formed by the ultrasonic tamping of granulated dolomite with a tar binder, is provided with a metal screening plate of one millimeter thickness covering its hot end face, and has elements, which may be integral with the framework, for securing the screening plate to the refractory mass of the block. The blocks are used for lining the roofs, floors and walls of electric, rotary, shaft and open hearth furnaces, pneumatic converters and mixers. The blocks are fired in position in the furnace at 2500‹ C. with an oxy-acetylene flame provided with excess oxygen to combust any tar vapours released. The screening plate which is destroyed during firing, prevents disintegration of the blocks before a creep preventing surface crust can be formed.
