Abstract

929,329. Pipe cleaning apparatus. W. SLUMA. Feb. 15,1962,No. 5889/62. Class 99(2). A pipe cleaning apparatus comprises a base 11 having a longitudinal passage 21, 22 passing therethrough and a transverse bore 23 communicating with the passage 21, 22 intermediate its ends. A rotary valve 25 having two bores 34, 35 and a pair of grooves 36, 37 at right angles to the bores, is sealed into bore 23, its shank 26 being connected to a handle 30. Two transparent tubes 41 are mounted and sealed in the base 11, chambers 42, 43 of the tubes communicating with valve 25 through passages 47, 48 in the base respectively. A third passage 60<SP>1</SP> connects chamber 42 to valve 25. The upper ends of tubes 41 are sealed into a head 49 which is secured to the base 11 by two parallel bolts 55 passing axially through tubes 41. The tubes 41 are closed at their lower ends by a mesh 39 adapted to support an abrasive material 44, the upper ends being connected through the head one to each end of a pipe 60 to be cleaned. With handle 30 in the position as in Fig. 1, bores 34, 35 of valve 25 communicate between passages 21, 47 and 20, 48 respectively so that a fluid under pressure passes through passages 20, 48 chamber 43, tube 60, chamber 42 and exhaust passages 47, 21. The material 44 is entrained by the fluid in chamber 43 and is deposited on the mesh 39 in chamber 42. To reverse the flow of pressurized fluid the valve 25 is rotated to bring grooves 36, 37 into communication with passages 20, 60<SP>1</SP> and 21, 48 respectively. A pin 32 secured in base 11 may co-operate with an arcuate slot 33 in the valve shaft 26 so as to limit the rotation of shaft to 90 degrees. In a modification for reversing the flow passage 60<SP>1</SP> may be omitted, a modified groove 36 then communicating with passages 20, 47.
