In a pilger rolling mill having the expendable mandrel 1 connected by a detachable expendable intermediate member 4 to a connecting member 12 attached in turn to mandrel feed means, a central duct 6 and a surrounding annular duct extend axially within the mandrel for the introduction and removal of cooling fluid. The ducts communicating with inlet and outlet openings in the connecting member. The mandrel 1 is secured to the member 4 by a nut 27 and torque is transmitted a conical boss 3 engaging with a conical bore 25 in the member 4 or alternatively by a boss of rectangular section. The cooling medium is admitted by way of a connection 21 and bores 22, an annular groove being provided between the connection 21 and the bore 22 so that fluid connection is maintained between the rotatable connecting member 12 and an axially-movable sleeve 14. A similar arrangement is provided at the outlet connection 23. Rotation of the sleeve 14 is prevented by a slide plate 16, Fig. 3, not shown. A sealing member 28 is provided between the duct 6 and the connecting member 12. The expendable intermediate member 4 is screwed into the connecting member at 13. To increase turbulence the mandrel interior may be fluted the duct 6 may be ribbed or a spring 29 may be included in the annular duct. In a modification, the intermediate member is merely a conical washer located between the mandrel and the connecting member, the latter member 5 being directly connected by a nut 27, Fig. 4 (not shown).
