Abstract
843,681. Nuclear reactors. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. Aug. 23, 1956 [Aug. 26, 1955], No. 25738/56. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor with a cylindrical core including a moderator of solid material formed with ducts extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the core and serving to contain fuel elements and to conduct fluid coolant, is provided with coolant directing means arranged to direct the coolant in a manner tending to maintain the sheaths of all the fuel elements at approximately the same temperature. In one arrangement, Fig. 4, baffles 9, 11 are arranged adjacent the end faces of the moderator block so that coolant flowing from an inlet 7 is directed radially over the inlet face of the moderator block. The baffles 9, 11 are preferably adjustable in a longitudinal direction, as by the rack and pinion devices shown. In another arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), coolant passes from an inlet to the centre fuel channels, and on reaching the other end of the channels is reflected by the pressure vessel into the outer channels whence it passes to an outlet located at the same end of the moderator block as the inlet. In a variant of this arrangement, Fig. 6, coolant passes from an inlet 7 through the centre channels, is deflected by a baffle 22 into the intermediate channels, and is deflected by a further baffle 21 into the outer channels and passes from them to the outlet 8. Tubes 19 pass through the surrounding pressure vessel and some of them pass through the baffle 21 to allow fuel elements to be inserted into and removed from the channels. In another arrangement, Fig. 8, two similar reactor cores 1, 1<SP>1</SP> are coaxially disposed with a coolant inlet space 23 between adjacent faces of the cores. Outwardly of the inlet space is an annular supply duct 24 formed with openings 26 uniformly distributed around its periphery and leading from the dust to the inlet space 23 so that in operation coolant enters the supply duct 24 and flows radially into the space 23 through the openings 26. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 755,291.
