Abstract

847,219. Nuclear fuel elements. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. Nov. 12, 1957 [Nov. 28, 1956], No. 36399/56. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XIII] In a nuclear fuel element comprising a container 1 having external helical fins 2, wherein coolant fluid flow paths formed between adjacent fins are interrupted by longitudinally extending baffles 3, e.g. as described in Specification 847,214, the baffles are loosely positioned in suitable slots formed in the helical fins 2 and are held in position by nuts 8 detachably secured at the tube ends to the tips of the helical fins and engaging in slots 9 formed in the ends of the baffles 3, a clearance (not shown), being provided around the nuts 8 such as to allow relative expansion between the baffle and the tube to take place. In the form shown the nuclear fuel 4 is positioned in the container 1 by end caps 5 which are welded to the ends of the container and are separated from the fuel by heat insulating discs 6. End fittings 7 of the conical form shown, are screwed on to the end fittings 5 and assist accurate location of the elements when being stacked in a reactor.
