The can of a fuel element for a gas cooled reactor has radial fins which are intersected by a continuous helical baffle. The latter fits into radial slots in the fins and may extend radially outwards from them and inwards to the can surface. Two baffles may be used, each having curved or inclined cross-sections to give a radially inward flow component to the cooling gas.
