Abstract

[Also in Division G6] In a gas turbine plant comprising a first closed circuit consisting of a compressor 18, regenerative heat exchanger 15, nuclear reactor heat source 11, turbine 12 and a further heat exchanger 17 for transferring residual heat to a second closed circuit, the components of the plant are arranged and selected such that of the energy produced by the heat source at least 20% is converted into mechanical energy in the turbine 12 and at least 16% is transferred by the heat exchanger 17 to the second closed circuit. The working fluid of the first circuit may be helium or carbon dioxide and that of the second circuit a "Freon" (Registered Trade Mark). The heat exchanger 17 acts as a vapour generator for the latter, the vapour passing to a turbine 22 and thence to a heat sink 23 and compressor 24. The thermal efficiencies of turbine 12 and heat exchanger 17 are each in excess of 20%.
