Abstract

1,144,172. Nuclear power plant. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 17 May, 1966 [21 May, 1965], No. 21740/65. Heading G6C. In a gas turbine nuclear power plant, the reactor, heat exchangers and turbine are mounted within a cylindrical concrete pressure vessel. Helium gas is circulated through the reactor core, 1, and passes directly through the turbocompressor 4, 5, 6 which circulates the gas, and through the power turbine 8 coupled to the alternator 15. The gas is cooled at the compressor stages 4, 5 in the inter-cooler 10 and pre-cooler 12, both of which have a secondary water circuit. From the compressors, the gas flows into a recuperator, 11, and then into the base of the core from the chamber 20a. The recuperator receives the exhaust gas from turbine 8 when heat exchange occurs with the gas flowing to the chamber 20a. The turbine 8 may be shut down in an emergency by a valve connecting the inlet and outlet ducts of the turbine and sensitive to the turbine speed.
