Abstract
792,171. Nuclear reactors. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. Nov. 5, 1956 [Nov. 8, 1955], No. 33728/56. Class 39(4). The cooling channels of a nuclear reactor are divided into a plurality of groups such that the neutron flux of all the channels of a group is within a given range, and separate means are provided for feeding coolant to each group so that the temperature and pressure at the inlet may be adjusted independently for each group to make it possible to obtain the best average thermodynamic efficiency for each group. Fig. 2 shows a plan view of a reactor wherein the cooling channels are divided into three groups at the inlet end by concentric metal chambers 9, 10, 11. Three blowers 18, 19, 20 supply coolant e.g., carbon dioxide, to the respective inlet chambers at 50‹C. for chamber 9, 150‹C. for chamber 10 and 200‹C. for chamber 11 at the same pressure, e.g., about 200 p.s.i. After passing through the reactor core 8 the coolant in each group is divided into two concentric sub-groups ; the coolant is in the outermost sub-group drives a jet pump 24, 25 or 26. which assists in extracting coolant from the innermost sub-group. After passing through the jet pumps, the coolant from all the channels is re-united in a conduit 31 and passed through heat exchangers 32, 33, 34 which are arranged so that their outlet temperatures correspond to the required inlet temperatures for the three groups.
