Abstract
893,668. Cooling reactors. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 1, 1960 [July 20, 1959], No. 24927/59. Class 39(4) The coolant gas ducts 4 of the nuclear reactor 1 are shielded from the neutron flux of core 3 by shields 5. The latter is formed of layers, starting from the core, comprising boron steel, graphite, boron steel, graphite, boron steel, graphite with a final thermal shield of mild steel. Coolant flows into the pressure vessel 1 through the annular channel between ducts 16, 17, passing into the supporting grid 8, upwards over the fuel elements 21 and into header 14, leaving through the inner coaxial duct 16. The coolant is circulated by blowers 30 through the pressure vessel 2 and heat exchangers 29 which are supported on bearings 25 to permit thermal expansion.
