Abstract

922,790. Travelling wave tubes. MULLARD Ltd. Dec. 1, 1959, No. 40797/59. Class 39 (1). In an electron beam tube, preferably a travelling wave tube, the electron gun is surrounded by a cylindrical conductive screen-a helix H, Fig. 1, or a wire mesh-which is insulated from the cathode and is maintained negative to the cathode to collect positive ions from the beam. As shown wire helix screen H is supported on wire rods R and is held at 500-1000 volts negative with respect to the cathode. Some positive ions go to the helix, others to the tube wall. Twin rectangular electron beams pass on either side of a flat interdigital delay line, the helix H terminating where the delay line commences. The cathode K is associated with a shield A, beam forming electrodes E and the gun electrodes are mounted on insulating pillars E.
