Abstract

878,890. Travelling wave tubes. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. April 28, 1960 [May 26, 1959], No. 14888/60. Class 39(1). In a travelling wave tube with one or more electron beams the delay line has at least one 'back plate' a longitudinal magnetic focusing field is provided and there is provided at least one conductor for draining positive ions and negative to the delay line arranged very close to the 'back plate' or within slots provided therein. The conductor which may be a bar or wire is longitudinal or transverse to the delay line. In one form, Fig. 2, ion drain bars 12 are screwed to insulating strips 13 Screwed to the two 'back plates' 10 and may be at cathode potential. The bars may be insulated by two strips from 'back plates', Fig. 5 (not shown) or wires are close to semicylindrical back plates Fig. 6 (not shown). A bar or wires may extend only over the attenuation zone of a backward wave oscillator. Two ribbon beams pass on opposite sides of an interdigital delay line 8. The output coaxial line is secured to the first finger of the delay line and a coil or permanent magnet focuses the beam. The glass envelope is soldered to the collector.
