Abstract

A tablet for semi-quantitative estimation of calcium in body fluid comprises a reagent giving a colour change with calcium ions, an aminopolyacetic acid or water-soluble salt thereof, lithium hydroxide, a tableting lubricant and an inert diluent, the proportions being such that on addition to water to which the fluid is added a pH of 12-12,5 is obtained. By providing a reagent which undergoes the same colour change in the presence of calcium and magnesium ions and on addition to water produces a pH of 9,8-10,2, a tablet suitable for estimating total hardness of water is obtained. Specified colour reagents are calcein (a fluoresceiniminodiacetic acid complex), preferably mixed with thymol phthalein, and Calcon (1-(2-hydroxy-1-naphthylazo)-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid), Cal-red (2-hydroxy-1-(2-hydroxy-4-sulpho-1-naphthylazo)) -3-naphthoic acid and alizarin black SN, and for magnesium also, Eriochrome black T. Specified aminopolyacetic acids are ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid, cyclohexane diamine tetraacetic acid and ethylene glycol bis-(b -amino ethyl ether) tetraacetic acid. The lubricant may be boric acid, which also serves as a buffer component, and excipients mentioned are sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, dextrose and citric acid. Two formulations are exemplified, in one of which the tablets are prepared by drying sodium chloride and lithium hydrooxide, mixing with disodium EDTA and boric acid by grinding in a ball mill, spraying the mixture with Eriochrome black T in methylated spirit, sieving, drying and compressing into tablets.
