Abstract
Tetracycline, oxytetracycline and chlortetracycline, or a water-soluble salt thereof e.g. the hydrochloride, is mixed with at least two mols per mol of antibiotic of citric and for tartaric acid, or a water-soluble salt thereof, in order to reduce the toxicity of the antibiotic when administered orally.ALSO:A tetracycline composition comprises a tetracycline antibiotic and at least two mols. per mol. of antibiotic of citric and/or tartaric acid, or a water-soluble salt thereof. Sufficient sodium bicarbonate may be present to neutralize some but not all the citric and/or tartaric ions. The tetracycline antibiotic may be tetracycline, oxytetracycline, chlortetracycline or a water-soluble salt thereof.
