Abstract
A method of testing the pH of water containing an oxidizing agent comprises addition of reducing agent to the water before or with the pH indicator, to which reducing agent acid or alkali has been added to adjust the pH of its solution to or approximately that of the mid-point of the pH range of the particular indicator. Embodiments use as indicators cresol red, cresol purple, thymol blue, bromophenol blue, bromocresol green, methyl red, chlorophenol red, bromocresol purple, bromothymol blue, phenol red or diphenol purple. Reducing agents used are thiosulphates, arsenites or sulphite. Indicator and reducing agents may be premixed in solution, powder or tablet form.
