Abstract

A composition for detecting glucose comprises a mixture of glucose oxidase, peroxidase, and a compound which changes colour in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The glucose oxidase may contain catalase. An aqueous solution of the mixture may be buffered to a pH of 2-8 by the addition of sodium acetate, carbonate, or citrate, and used to impregnate paper strips which are dipped in the liquid to be tested. Alternatively the mixture may be in the form of a powder or compressed tablets to which a drop of the liquid is added. The tablets may contain diluents or fillers such as starch, lactose or, bentonite. In examples the compound which changes colour is o-tolidine dihydrochloride or benzidine dihydrochloride; in the presence of glucose a green to blue colour develops. Other suitable colour-changing compounds are guaiacols, orcinol, pyrogallol, gallic acid, leucomalachite green, leucophenolphthalein, and iodides together with starchy material. The compositions may be used for detecting glucose in urine, blood serum, or whole blood. Specification 575,612 is referred to.
