Abstract

A diagnostic composition for determining the protein (e.g albumin) content of body fluids consists of a polychromatic substance which changes colour in the presence of albumin and a buffer to maintain the indicator solution at a predetermined pH value. The polychromatic indicator is preferably bromphenol blue, or bromcresol green, and the buffer is a mixture of citric acid and sodium citrate or similar mixtures using boric, tartaric or malonic acid. Trichloracetic or sulphosalicylic acid may be used alone. Preferably the solution is buffered to a value below its normal pH range. The solution may be used to impregnate paper, which is then used as a test paper and the colour change compared with colour standards corresponding to known albumin content. The protein present in solution may be denatured by an acid buffer, or by adding salt solution. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 791,228.
