Abstract
The fluoride content of a sample of water is estimated by colorimetric techniques after the addition to the sample of a mixture, in solid form, comprising a metal salt and a dye reacting therewith to form a fluoride sensitive lake. The salt may be zirconium oxychloride, thorium nitrate, aluminium ammonium sulphate or a compound of ferric iron, cerium or lanthanum. The dye may be alizarin red S, aluminon, eriochrome cyanine R, xylenol orange, haematoxylin, ammonium aurine tricarboxylate, purpurin sulphonate, solochrome violet RS, 1-(o-arsenophenylazo)-2-naphthol-3:6-disulphonic acid or 4,5-dihydroxy-3-(parasulphophenylazo)-2,7-naphthalene-disulphonic acid trisodium salt. The mixture may also contain a compound, such as sodium bisulphate, sulphamic acid or potassium hydrogen phthalate, which serves to swamp and hence blanket the effect of any natural sulphate in the sample, and an additional acidifying agent. The mixture is used in tablet or capsule form and may contain fillers, lubricants and disintegrants. A predetermined proportion of mixture in the sample water achieves a colour which is examined by a spectrophotometer or compared visually with standards. Standards may be coloured glasses or solutions, prepared by adding identical quantities of mixture to distilled water or to samples of water taken before fluoridation, together with standard quantities of soluble sodium fluoride or ammonium fluoride, preferably used in tablet form. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 902,884.
