920,449. Return tube steam boilers. SPENCER-BONECOURT-CLARKSON Ltd. March 30, 1961 [March 31, 1960], No. 11334/60. Class 123 (2). In a return tube boiler comprising a furnace tube 5 connected through a first gas turning space 7 lined with refractory blocks and closed by a door 21 to a set of fire tubes 18 which convey the gases to a second gas turning space 4 whence a second set of fire tubes return the gases to a third gas turning space 8 provided with an outlet to a chimney 9, back-flow of gases through the furnace tube due to sudden combustion of pockets of fuel in the rear part of the tube or in the gas turning space 7 is prevented by providing an explosion door between the spaces 7, 8. The door consists of a block 15 which fits loosely into an aperture 14 provided in the upper horizontal plate 11 of the partition separating the spaces 7, 8, the block having a supporting flange 15A which rests on the plate whilst the latter has welded to it a metal strap 16 which extends across the block 15 and limits its upward movement. Sudden pressure occurring in the space 7 lifts the block 15 to vent gas to the chimney 9. When the pressure falls, the block 15 drops to close the aperture.
