The alternating current to an electromagnet, having a non-linear voltage/current characteristic, for a betatron or synchrotron is stabilized by a capacitor or inductor in series with the supply to the electromagnet. For the series capacitor, the combination of capacitor and electromagnet is arranged to present a capacitive impedance to the supply. An auxiliary tuning coil is connected across the supply to reduce the wattless current.
