Abstract

680,861. Automatic voltage control systems. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S., and FURZEHILL LABORATORIES, Ltd. July 17, 1951 [July 27, 1950], No. 18761/50. Class 38 (iv). An A.C. voltage regulator comprises a " booster " transformer having a centre-tapped primary with the two halves fed through saturable reactors arranged as in Specification 633,375 to be differentially controlled by deviations in the load voltage. As shown, an unstabilized A.C. source 1, 2 supplies a load at 101, 102. The " booster transformer 3 is controlled through saturable reactors 6, 7, 10, 11, having a control winding 14. The control voltage is derived from a bridge circuit with non-linear voltage/resistance elements in opposite arms (e.g. metal filament lamps 19, 20) and energized from the load circuit through a transformer 29. The bridge output is applied to the control windings through a ring demodulator having a reference voltage supplied by a transformer 24, to provide phase-sense discrimination of the control voltage. Alternatively, the control voltage may be obtained (i) from a pair of resistance/inductance potential dividers having one voltage variable inductor, and one substantially independent of voltage energized from the load circuit, the derived deviation voltage being applied to the input terminals A, B of the ring demodulator, Fig. 2 (not shown), or (ii) a resistance and voltage variable inductance in series with bridge rectifiers across the load circuit may supply the control winding 14, and a further control winding 15 respectively, Fig. 3 (not shown).
