Abstract
598,285. Magnetic amplifiers. HUDSON, C. S. Oct. 26, 1945, No. 28374. [Class 40 (iv)] [Also in Group XXXV] A magnetic amplifier affording a unidirectional output comprises saturable reactors 33, 34, Fig. 1, having windings 31, 32 connected in series with half-wave rectifiers 35, 36 across an A.C. source 41, the output, which is dependent upon the D.C. input to control windings 43, 44, being taken from terminals 47, 48 connected between the junction of the rectifiers and a centre tapping on the A.C. source. Negative or positive feed-back windings 49, 50 may also be provided. Further windings 51, 52 may provide an A.C. output. The rectifiers may be oppositely poled, as shown, to afford a full-wave rectified output, or poled in the same direction to render the polarity of the output dependent upon that of the control current. Fig. 3 shows a combination of these two arrangements using four reactors and giving a full-wave rectified output dependent as regards polarity upon the control current. The several control windings may be combined into a single winding embracing all the reactors-as also may the feed-back windings. Several control windings excited by different currents may be provided. If only an A.C. output is required, the terminals 47, 48 may be short-circuited. Alternatively, the A.C. output windings may be omitted and an inductive load supplied from the terminals 47, 48 through a condenser.
