Abstract

720,121. Magnetic amplifiers. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S., and FURZEHILL LABORATORIES, Ltd. July 29, 1953 [July 31, 1952], No. 19447/52. Class 40 (4). Rectifiers 107, 207 are connected in series with the control windings 103, 203 of two saturable reactors 1, 2, together forming a magnetic amplifier, so that the output of the amplifier is provided almost wholly by one reactor or the other in accordance with the polarity of the control signal. The two reactors are identical. The first comprises a core 101 carrying a power winding 102, a control winding 103, a feed-back winding 104 and a standing bias winding 105. The standing bias winding is connected to a D.C. source 19. The control and feed-back windings are also biased from D.C. sources 17, 18 to overcome the thresholds of the rectifiers. The power windings of the two reactors are fed by a generator 3 and the outputs are connected in opposition to the primary 5 of a transformer 6. The two transformer secondaries 11, 12 feed a phase-sensitive demodulator 13, described in Specification 703,928, [Group XL (c)], an A.C. reference input in phase with 3 being connected at 14. The D.C. output is derived from terminals 15, 16 in series with the feed-back circuit 9, 10.
