[Class 38 (ii)] [Also in Group XL (a)] A choke in parallel with the main field coils of a betatron-synchrotron for maintaining their inductance constant, has in its magnetic circuit an air gap adjustable, by rotating a suitably shaped member by a synchronous motor driven from the same source as the field coils; or the choke may form the central limb of a saturable reactor whose outer limbs carry windings for controlling the inductance of the choke, and energized from the same source as the field coils.
