Abstract

665,828. Magnetic induction accelerators. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Jan. 26, 1948 [Jan. 24, 1947], No. 2296/48. Class 39 (i). In an air-cored betatron or betatron-synchrotron, the accelerating windings are so proportioned and positioned as to generate magnetic fields which neutralize one another at the electron orbit so that they exert, substantially no deflecting force at the orbit. The accelerate ing windings comprise an inner set C1, C2 and an outer set D1, D2 so designed and positioned as to give cancellation of the field at the orbit and also of its first, and second derivatives with respect to the radius. The guide field is produced by an inner winding H and outer windings G1, G2 so designed that the guide field decreases less rapidly than inversely proportional to the radius. Each winding may be subdivided, the leads emerging at equally-spaced circumferential points, to minimize field variations due to the leads. Specification 622,148 is referred to.
