Abstract
914,753. Applying balance weights to wheels. HOFMANN, D., [trading as HOFMANN KOMM.-GES. GEB.]. July 23, 1959, No. 25316/59. Class 144 (1). Apparatus for applying a balance weight 24 to a vehicle wheel by means of a U-shaped retaining spring which embraces the balance weight with one limb trapped between the tyre bead and the rim flange, and holds the weight against the axially outer face of the rim flange, comprises a pair of pneumatically-operated pincers 9 having roller-ended jaws 11 to pinch the tyre beads together adjacent the desired point of application of the balance weight, and means 12 associated with one or both jaws to support separately the balance weight and the retaining spring and to move the spring into operative engagement with the weight and the rim flange. As shown, the apparatus is combined with a machine 1 for indicating the out-of-balance correction necessary, the wheel resting on a transfer table 14 which moves the wheel, after balance-testing, into an upright position in a recess 3 of the machine frame 2 which is aligned with the pincers 9 and flanked by a tray 4 storing the balance weights. Each weight-applying means 12 is carried on an extension of the associated pincer arm and comprises a weight support 22 co-operating with a pair of leaf-springs 23 which engage in recesses 25 provided in each weight 24. Aligned with the support 22, 23 is a spring-loaded manually-operable plunger 30 the free end 33 of which is recessed to house the U-shaped weight-retaining spring which is held in the recess by magnets 34. The plunger 30 and the support 22, 23 are pivotally mounted on a frame member and are spring-urged apart between adjustable stops 36 on the frame member to permit of limited relative movement between the plunger 30 and the weight support, and thereby ensure alignment with the wheel rim flange during weight application. The pincers are associated with an adjustable stop 28 which abuts the tyre tread when the jaws are correctly positioned embracing the tyre. In Fig. 1, the devices 12 are pivoted to the jaws 9a, 9b, whereas in Figs. 4 and 5, they are shown connected by spring arms 37 to a bracket 38 on the jaws.
