Abstract
601,193. Hand trucks. COZENS, F. G. Nov. 10, 1945, No. 30061. [Class 108 (i)] A sack truck is provided with an axle displaceable under load in relation to the frame whereby when raising the load from the ground the truck can pivot about the heel end of the toe piece. In Fig. 1, the frame 10, which may be tubular, is provided with legs 15 and toe piece 17, the axle tube 24 of the wheels 23 being supported by a bell-crank 26, 30 and a spring-supported telescopic strut 32 from a frame 22 attached to the members 10. The bell-crank 26, 30 is pivoted at 27 to the frame 22, its movement being limited by a toe 28 swinging between the bar 10 and a stop 29. The axle tube 24, Fig. 4, passes through the bell-crank 26, 30 and forms a socket for a pin 9 forming the wheel axle bearing, the pin 9, tube 24 and ball-crank 29, 30 being secured together by a set-screw 8. The telescopic strut 32 comprises an outer tube 34, pivoted to the arm 30 of the bell-crank, and an inner tube 35 pivoted to the frame 22 at 33, a spring 38 and distance piece 39, Fig. 2 (not shown), providing a spring cushion which is limited by the length of the distance piece. In a modification, the arm 30 of the bell-crank is dispensed with, the links 26, 32 being pivoted on the axle. When the toe-plate 17 is inserted under a load, the wheels 23 move upward and the frame 10 pivots about the heel 18 of the toeplate until the toe 28 of the bell-crank arm 26 contacts the frame 10 and the distance-piece 39 prevents further collapsing of the strut 32, whereafter the fulcrum is transferred to the wheel axle 9.
