Lifting weight off springs when not required.- Relates to portable cranes with means for rigidly connecting the vehicle frame 2 with the axle 6 when the crane is under load, in order to relieve the springs 5 and prevent overturning. For this purpose a bracket 8 bolted to the frame 2 near each spring may be connected with a bracket 16 secured by U-bolts 17 to the axle and spring, and a jack 41, 43, on a pivoted arm 36 may be brought over the wheel. The connection between the brackets 8 and 16 comprises a member 15 which is a sliding fit in the bracket 8, a removable pin 25 for locking the member 15 in its socket, and a removable pivot pin 21 connecting the member 15 with the bracket 16. Each bracket 8 is provided with a screw jack 41, 43 in an arm pivotally mounted at 39. The arm 36 is normally secured alongside the frame 2, but may be held by a stay 45 in the operative position shown, with the shoe 43 over the wheel, in order to raise the frame 2 until the pin 25 can be inserted. When the crane is in use, the frame may be supported directly from the axle by the bracket 8, or partly from the axle and partly from the wheels by the jacks 41. When the crane is not in use, the member 15 may slide freely in the bracket 8, or it may be supported clear of the bracket 16 by removing the pin 21 and passing the pin 25 through the bracket 8 and the hole 30.
