Abstract

474,605. Hand trucks. BIRNHOLZ, P. J. April 28, 1936, No. 12073. [Class 108 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] A wheeled jack for use in manoeuvring vehicles comprises a supporting frame 8, 9 on which is adapted to be raised and lowered an inverted U-shaped cradle frame 1, the lower ends 3 of which form a seating for a vehicle wheel 4, the wheels 11 of the supporting frame being on the opposite side to the vehicle wheel so that when the cradle is raised the weight causes the jack to bear against the side of the wheel. The cradle frame 1 is of inwardly facing channel section metal, the outwardly splayed lower ends of the limbs 2 being connected by a cross-bar 7 and having riveted &c. thereto the shoes 3 shaped to grip the wheel tyre. The cross-bar 8 of the supporting frame slides in the channel frame 1 and is carried by the legs or posts 9 which are offset as shown in Fig. 3, passing through apertured guides on the cross-bar 7 and being mounted at their lower ends on wheels or castors 11. The cradle frame may be raised by a toggle connection 15, 16, operable by a lever 13 and bearing against a stop 19 when past its dead centre, or lifting may be effected by other lever systems or cams &c. The wheels 11, if not castor wheels, may be mounted on fixed axles 12 inclined to the carrying frame so that their axes, if produced, would, when the device is applied to the wheel of a vehicle, intersect at a point near the centre of the other axle of the vehicle, thereby facilitating swinging of the vehicle about such point.
