Abstract
792,596. Aircraft landing gear. CORDOBA, R. May 24, 1956 [June 2, 1955], No. 15794/55. Class 4. Apparatus for rotating an aircraft wheel prior to landing comprises a series of flaps 10 mounted on the side of the wheel in regular angular disposition, and pivotable on axes C lying in a plane radial to the wheel axis, being urged to a first position, but movable to an upstanding position by the airstream, the airstream then catching the flaps to rotate the wheel. In Fig. 2, nine base plates 11 are spaced around the rim 14 of the wheel, being secured by hooks 13 to the rim, and being joined by a circular wire 16 made in three sections for easy dismantling. A sleeve 23 is rotatably mounted in lugs 24 on each base plate, and a pin 22 fastened to the sleeve mounts a flap 10. The flap comprises two end walls 17 (see also Fig. 4) connected by a face wall 19 (see also Fig. 3). Holes 25 are formed in each end wall to receive pin 22, and these walls are so shaped that when side 18A contacts the base plate, the drag on the plate is higher than when side 18 contacts the base plate. A torsion spring 28, Fig. 2, surrounds pin 22 and urges side 18A of the flap into contact with the plate. The plate has rubber inserts where the flap contacts the plate. Suitable dimensions for the flap are given. In a non-retractable undercarriage, means may be provided for holding the flaps in the first position.
